How the Fertility Awareness Method has a 99.4% success rate at preventing pregnancy (if done correctly)

How to confirm ovulation and avoid pregnancy using Fertility Awareness & cycle tracking methods

The sexual practices we (Naema and I) do to prevent pregnancy together, plus what Naema really thinks about semen retention

Sex & Pregnancy Prevention…

Today I’m joined by Naema Pierce, a pelvic specialist and sex coach for women, who’s also an expert in helping women get off of hormonal birth control so they can feel deeply alive and sexy in their natural bodies. We’ve been romantic/sexual partners for almost 3 years now. And…

We have successfully prevented pregnancy using the Fertility Awareness Method + Semen Retention for our entire relationship.

For clarity, I do occasionally ejaculate inside her, and we ARE both fertile (I just confirmed this with my own sperm analysis test). So that means our natural birth control methods of using fertility awareness / cycle tracking and semen retention work!

This episode is a great one for ALL genders….

And I recommend listening on Spotify or Apple at the links above, and THEN looking at the charts below once you’ve gotten to the charting section of the episode.

Naema’s Cycle Tracking Chart…

In this episode, Naema talks about using a chart to track her basal body temperature, and we wanted to include an example of a full chart here (with details and explanations below).

Basal Body Temperature Tracking:

Basal body temperature is the main biomarker Naema tracks on a regular basis. The term refers to her body’s temperature immediately upon waking up (without doing anything else or eating/drinking anything).

When you look at the chart below, can you pinpoint ovulation?

How to Confirm Ovulation & the Luteal Phase:

I’ve overlaid some graphics on top of the chart, with descriptions and thoughts below the chart. Remember that this page is NOT supposed to be a complete education on how to track your menstrual cycle. The images here are just for discussion related to this podcast.

🟡 – This is a perfect example of why you need 3 days of raised temperatures to confirm ovulation! The body’s temperature can fluctuate day to day because of all kinds of things… If we had assumed that the temperature spike on the 23rd signified that ovulation happened, we could have gotten pregnant the next two days.

🔵 – Ovulation happened at some point within this 48-hour window, on the 24th or 25th.

🟢 – These are the three confirmation days. The body’s temperature rises AFTER ovulation occurs, and stays consistent throughout the remainder of the Luteal Phase. Three days confirms this consistency. After these 3 days (on the 26th), it was safe for me to ejaculate inside of her up until the first day of her bleed, without having any concern of pregnancy.

Next Steps:

REMINDER: Please do NOT attempt the natural birth control methods mentioned in this podcast without doing serious research first. This takes serious commitment and understanding to get it right, and the stakes are VERY high.

If you are a woman who wants to learn how to do this successfully (remember the 99.4% effectiveness rate), Naema has a great cycle tracking course that will give you everything you need to confidently and joyously do this practice.

And if you’re a man who wants to try the practice of semen retention, you’ll find links below.
